DVDs are highly popular for being high capacity storage mediums that are cheap to purchase. DVD writers are also very cheap these days since newer technologies like Blu-ray drew attention. They can stack up in DVD container, fit nicely into CD/DVD booklets, and can be carried around anywhere in jewel cases. However, like CDs, they can easily be scratched and are quite sensitive to certain harmful elements.
Getting Started – Cleaning your DVD
The goal here is to repair these discs so their critical data can be read once again. Before any repairs should be made, a good clean of the disc should be done first. Disc damage is not only caused by scratches but also by the surface dirt or oil that is accumulated on the disc. Follow these steps in cleaning your DVD:
1. Get an optical disc cleaning cloth or any other non-lint producing cloth and dip it in warm water.
2. Rub the cloth on the disc in straight lines from the center to the edge of the disc. Avoid wiping in circular motion to keep the dirt off instead of spreading it around.
3. Let it dry and test to see if it works again.
If your DVD works, you don’t need to repair it as it was just dirty. DVD disc repair is only needed when the cleaning fails.
When Cleaning Fails – Repairing your DVD
Scratches are the main reason why certain parts of the DVD fail to read. Most of these scratches actually do not do direct damage to the data itself, but only conceal the data from the laser eye’s view. This means that by simply polishing the scratches or cracks, the laser eye can read the data once again.
The Temporary Fix – Filling the Cracks
If you are on a rush in getting it to work and do not wish to risk on damaging the disc, simply fill the cracks with Vaseline, furniture polish, or anything in between. It doesn’t last too long and you may find yourself having a scratched DVD once again over time.
The Permanent Fix – Polishing the Scratches
This DVD disc repair method is best and permanent fix as long as it’s done properly. You can use Drummel or baking soda toothpaste with a cloth in gently polishing the scratches. Make sure that these polishes are done as even as possible so the actual data layer won’t be affected. Just like clean, never wipe, or polish in circles. If done correctly, the plastic buffer that coats the stored data should wear away making the scratch easier to see through. Take note that you are not getting rid of the entire plastic buffer layer, but you are just evenly wearing off the area that surrounds the scratch.
The Quick Fix – Using a Scratch Repairer
